Trail Etiquette – Rules – Safety

PLEASE be a COURTEOUS TRAIL USER

State of Connecticut Trail Use Guidelines.

Stay to right on the trail unless passing.

Yield Guidelines:

  • Cyclists and e-Bikes yield to pedestrians and horses.
  • Pedestrians yield to horses.
  • Announce passing with verbal warning or bicycle bell.
  • Bikers – Reduce speed when passing pedestrians, horses, and other bikers.
    • Slow down is especially important when passing horses.

Report vandalism and trail maintenance issues to Vernon Parks and Rec.

Obey posted signs.

Keep dogs on leash per town of Vernon leash law  $25 fine:

Respect privacy of property owners along trails.

Carry out what you carry in. Use litter receptacles provided at trailheads and parking lots.

Owners of animals on the trail, in particular dogs and horses, are responsible for their animal’s safe control at all times.

NOT PERMITTED

Motorized vehicles - except for motorized wheelchairs.

E-bikes – Class 3

Bicycles and horses on hiking trails.

 DO NOT

Litter – this includes cigarette/cigar butts and ashes.

Leave dog feces or horse manure on or along trail per town of Vernon $25 fine: Ordinance 314

Disturb wildlife.

Make fires or dispose of cigarette butts in the forest.
